Contracting in Your State
Every day, tens of thousands of Americans work to improve the
performance of government, not as federal employees but as contractor
employees. They are researchers and engineers, technology workers,
skilled laborers and more. And, in many states, they are the core of the
state’s most important economic engine. For example, in 2007
alone, more than a thousand companies, many of them small businesses,
won more than $13 billion in federal contracts for work to be
performed in Pennsylvania---contracts that have enabled them to create
and sustain tens of thousands of high quality jobs across the state.
That’s the kind of positive economic news we don’t hear
enough about.
The lists below show the number of Federal contract dollars flowing
into each state (first listed
alphabetically, then in
descending order). This data came from the government's
Federal Procurement Data System--Next Generation (FPDS-NG). Another good
resource for this type of spending data is FedSpending.org, which also
relies on the federal government's data.
The data below reflects total spending on
goods and services contracts in 2007 (as reported by January
2008). Spending not assigned to a state may have been
performed outside the United States.
